ANZTS TRAUMA 2025 CONFERENCE RECAP

The Australian & New Zealand Trauma Society Trauma 2025 Conference was held in Wellington, New Zealand. From the 22nd to 24th of October, the conference program covered a broad range of engaging topics within the theme of Survive to Thrive. The ANZTR presented a poster (authored by Ancelin McKimmie, Prof Peter Cameron and Prof Zsolt Balogh) titled ‘Demographics, Mechanism and Outcomes of Polytrauma in Australia and New Zealand’, which was well received by conference attendees. The poster can be found here.

ANNUAL REPORT UPDATE

The 2023-24 ANZTR Annual Report is currently being finalised and will be available soon. This year, the focus section of the report is Polytrauma - defined as having at least two significant (AIS≥3) injuries in two or more body regions and is associated with physiological compromise and systemic inflammation, and comparatively poorer outcomes. Polytrauma was recently recognised as a disease by the World Health Organisation and it will be code-able in the 11th version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) based on an international consensus definition.

Approximately one quarter of all severely injured were polytraumatised. Incidence was highest among younger - predominantly male - adults, and polytrauma patients had worse outcomes compared with the rest of the major trauma population. This highlights the need for a specific focus on this high-risk population in injury prevention, clinical care and research.

In the interim, please see the 2023-24 Year in Review for both Australia and New Zealand below.
